Beaver Island Sunset

We paddled from Paradise Bay around past Sucker Point to watch the sunset from our kayaks. Lake Michigan and the reflecting sunset was like a golden mirror.

Mosquito Beach

An early October sunset illuminates Mosquito Beach at the Pictured Rocks national Lakeshore. The sandstone shore becomes vibrant as the sun begins to set.

Manitou Gold

As the afternoon became evening, the sky turned into fiery golden glow over the Manitou Passage. Looking back toward Glen Arbor from South Manitou Island, the sky was a haze of fire and the water was like molten gold.

Anchor Island Sunset

While kayak camping in the Georgian Bay near Killarney Provincial Park, we camped on Anchor Island. Thunderstorms had wheeled through the area just missing us, The resulting sunset was a mix of clear skies with storm clouds.

Frankfort Sunset

The Frankfort North Breakwater Lighthouse was first put into service in 1912. It was updated in the early 1930's with the original 44 foot lighthouse set on a new 25 foot steel base.

Winter Storm

Point Betsie Winter Sunset

Ice was beginning to form on one of the break walls near the Point Betsie lighthouse. The sun was setting in a thin haze of clouds that accented the purples and oranges that are common this time of winter.

Frankfort Lighthouse Winter Gale

A winter gale had arrived on Lake Michigan in February of 2018. Wind and waves were crashing against the lighthouse and harbor breakwater. The sunset was fiery with thin high clouds that muted the colors yet they contrasted with the cold blue ice that coated the lighthouse and filled the mouth of the Betsie river.

Haze From the Smoke of a Distant Fire

Viewed from Silver Island, the sun sets in smoky haze over the Fox Islands near Killarney, Ontario. The result of nearby forest fire that left the sky filled with a surreal haze. Usually hot temperatures and a dead calm accentuated the scene. Title inspired by the Sanford-Townsend Band.

September Gale

While the Great Lakes are infamous for the Gales of November, gales are common as summer fades into autumn. The Frankfort lighthouse and break wall bear the brunt of this late September gale and the waves that it borne. Occasional breaks in the clouds let a late afternoon sun shine on the ragged waves.

Mackinaw Blue Ice

An upheaval of blue ice that forms most winters in the Mackinaw Straits. Snow and ice get compressed and during compression, air bubbles are squeezed out, so ice crystals enlarge. This enlargement is responsible for the ice's blue color. The blowing wind and current also create large upheavals that can reach over 25 feet tall . The ones in this photo are a mere 8-10 feet tall.
